Gemotions

The familiar scent of stale coffee did little to lift Chloe's spirits as she sat hunched over the kitchen table. The morning light seemed to lack its usual vibrancy. Her gaze kept drifting to the framed photo on the counter. In it, she stood beside her best friend, Sarah, beaming at the camera.

Sarah entered the kitchen, a spring in her step and a plate of pancakes in her hands. “That camping trip! Remember?” she exclaimed, placing the plate in front of Chloe.

Chloe’s stomach twisted. The camping trip… It was a blur of exhaustion and frustration for her. She was cold and wet, and the food was awful.

"We had such a blast roasting those marshmallows," Sarah continued, her eyes alight.

Chloe looked at the photo, the smiling faces staring back at her. All she could remember was the mud, the mosquitoes, and the constant feeling of being utterly miserable. "I barely remember roasting any marshmallows," she murmured, a knot forming in her throat.
