The day felt gray, mirroring his mood. Each breath felt like an effort. His mother's death had left a void he couldn’t fill. He'd been avoiding it for too long, but it was time to face the inevitable: sorting through her belongings.

He went directly to her study, where she'd kept her files and mementos. On the top shelf of the bookcase, he found a box labeled with his name in her familiar handwriting.

He opened it, and a flood of memories washed over him. He started going through his old papers, looking at his handwriting change and develop. The oppressive weight that had been on his chest seemed to lessen.
