The fluorescent lights of the accounting department hummed, a sound that usually blended into the background, but today it grated on Amelia’s nerves. She stared at the spreadsheet, numbers blurring before her eyes. The transfer to marketing, effective immediately, had landed like a lead weight in her stomach. She hadn’t wanted this.

Her shoulders slumped. She pushed back from her desk, the squeak of the chair echoing in the sudden silence of her morning. She hadn't even finished the coffee she'd made, a task she usually relished. It sat cold and untouched.

"Amelia?" Her supervisor, Mr. Henderson, peered into her cubicle, his brow furrowed with concern. "Everything alright? You look… preoccupied." Amelia mumbled a quick "fine," and then watched Mr. Henderson disappear as if by magic.
