The weight of the day settled on David’s shoulders as he dragged himself through the front door. The fluorescent lights of the office, the endless demands, the unspoken expectations… it had all taken its toll. He wanted only to disappear.

He kicked off his shoes and shuffled into the kitchen, the scent of dinner barely registering.

Suddenly, a voice, a sing-song voice, filled the room. “你好，親愛的！歡迎回家！” It was Emily, his partner, her face lit up.

David froze, his brow furrowing. He was confused, and something within him recoiled.

“What…?” He felt his jaw clench.

Emily beamed. “I’ve been learning Mandarin!”
