Gemotions

A sense of weariness had settled over Maya. She approached the mailbox, her feet dragging. A burst of color in the otherwise drab mailbox – a birthday card. She picked it up, the paper feeling flimsy in her hand.

She didn't know who sent it. She glanced at the outside, no name, no return address. The apartment, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt cold. She went inside, and placed it on the counter. She felt… exhausted.

She looked at the card, the bright colors mocking her. She wanted to crawl back into bed. She made a cup of tea, but couldn't bring herself to drink it.
