He felt as though he was wading through molasses. The air around him seemed thick and suffocating. David, sitting across from him at the bar, was recounting the details of a trip to a local jazz club. It was the same one he had taken with… a woman. He felt the blood drain from his face. The music, which he usually loved, now sounded distant and muffled.

“And,” David chuckled, “she thought the saxophone solo was the best thing she’d ever heard. Funny! I was there with her a few days ago, right? Her name, ah, was… Alex. I believe. And now, you. Same place! With David."
