The world seemed to have lost its color, replaced with shades of gray. The restaurant’s chatter and clinking cutlery grated on his nerves. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion, a bone-deep weariness he couldn’t explain. He'd met this woman, Amy, on a train, and the conversation was pleasant. However, the details of her life seemed a bit too familiar. She began to describe a cooking class she'd taken, and he instantly knew.

"And," she said enthusiastically, "he even made a mess in the kitchen! He must have been a blast. You took the class, didn't you? With David?"
