"This place is…something," Sam said, his voice buoyant. His sister, Maya, was silent, her shoulders slumped. The house, filled with the ghosts of the past, seemed to press down on her.

She sat on the floor of the living room, surrounded by unpacked boxes. The scent of her grandmother's perfume, still clinging to a scarf, made her eyes prick. The light streaming through the windows did nothing to lift the weight she carried.

She looked at her hands, turning them over and over. They felt detached, as though they didn't belong to her. The future stretched before her, a vast and empty expanse.
