The invitation arrived with a harsh thud, landing on the doormat like a death knell. Sarah shuffled to retrieve it, her feet heavy, each step a chore. The glossy card announced the demolition. The old house, her childhood sanctuary, would be gone in a month.

She dragged herself into the kitchen, the sunlight doing little to dispel the gloom settling over her. She knew she should call her siblings, share the news, but the energy to dial even one number felt beyond her reach. Instead, she stared out the window, her gaze fixed on the wilting geraniums on the sill.

A sigh escaped her, a sound of profound deflation. She poured herself a cup of lukewarm tea, the clinking of the ceramic a dull echo in the cavernous room. The memories – the laughter, the arguments, the whispered secrets – suddenly felt distant, fading, like a watercolor left out in the rain.
