The phone call arrived like a punch to the gut. The house, the only place she’d ever truly felt safe, was slated for destruction. She stared out the window, the world outside appearing muted, as if drained of color.

She moved through her day in slow motion, the tasks she normally enjoyed suddenly feeling burdensome. Making coffee. Checking emails. Talking to friends. Everything felt pointless.

She found herself replaying the past in her mind, like a worn-out record. Her fingers traced the lines of the old photographs, the images of a life soon to be lost. A profound sense of loss consumed her. She knew that part of her, too, was fading away.
