She slumped onto the park bench, the metal cold and unyielding against her back. The rejection letter from the patent office was crumpled in her pocket, a betrayal of the dreams she'd nurtured for years. Her energy, once a boundless spring, was now sluggish and low. The innovative self-stirring coffee mug – her magnum opus – was, apparently, already the property of a corporation with deeper pockets and a faster lawyer. She imagined them, cool and efficient, dismissing her efforts. She could feel the fight drain from her. She watched the people passing by with the lightest of steps.
