He shuffled into his dimly lit garage, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead like angry insects. He’d barely slept in days. His incredible automatic dog-walking device, a stroke of genius in his opinion, was a non-starter. Someone else had beaten him to it. He kicked a stray wrench across the concrete floor. The sound echoed in the vast emptiness. He imagined the other inventor, smug and successful. He couldn't shake the feeling of being utterly defeated. He didn't know what to do next.
