The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to mock Alex. The bright, cheerful morning only served to highlight the internal darkness that clung to him. His roommate, Maya, bounced into the kitchen, a cheerful melody escaping her lips. “I saw the cutest puppy at the shelter today!” she announced, her voice overflowing with enthusiasm. “We should get it! Think of how much fun it would be!”

Alex grunted in response, pushing a stray piece of toast around his plate with a fork. The idea of a puppy, with its boundless energy and demands for attention, felt overwhelming. It felt like another thing, another responsibility, another weight to carry.

“I just… I don’t know, Maya,” he said, his voice flat. He looked out the window at the vibrant world outside, a world he didn't feel like participating in. He picked at the toast, pushing it around the plate, not sure what he was doing or where he was going.
