"Alright, everyone," the aunt said, tapping a glass with a fork. "Let's hear what Liam has to say about his amazing mother!" Liam flinched, the sound cutting through his lethargy. He had been hoping to simply disappear, to melt into the floral wallpaper.

He slowly rose to his feet, his limbs feeling stiff and uncooperative. The room swam into focus. He fumbled with the note cards in his hands.

He began. He spoke in a monotone, the words tumbling out in a rush, devoid of emotion. He finished quickly and returned to his chair, collapsing back into it.
