The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a particularly irritating tune today, bouncing off the stale air. Sarah slumped into her chair, the familiar click of the wheels a weary sound in the sudden quiet. A lump settled in her stomach, a lead weight threatening to pull her further down into the abyss of her morning. She'd been staring at her screen for an hour, the spreadsheet blurring into meaningless columns of numbers.

A coworker, Mark, breezed past her desk, a bundle of energy in his usual crisp button-down. "Morning, Sarah!" he chirped, his voice echoing a little too loudly. She managed a weak nod, the gesture feeling heavy, as if her limbs were anchored. He wouldn't understand. She took a deep breath, trying to dispel the fog that had settled in her mind.

The news had hit her like a punch to the gut: acquisition. She'd overheard hushed whispers during the coffee break, words like "restructuring" and "synergies" and, of course, the dreaded "right-sizing". The thought of upheaval, of the potential job loss – it was a pressure she could barely bear.
