The morning sun, usually a source of comfort, streamed through the blinds, casting long, stark shadows across the office floor. Carol sat at her desk, her back rigidly straight, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Her head felt muddled, as if she were underwater.

The news arrived in a succinct, cold email from the CEO. Acquisition. The word echoed in her mind. Her usual enthusiasm had evaporated. She remembered the early days, the excitement, the camaraderie. Now, all she felt was a deep, underlying sadness.

She imagined the conversations to come, the anxious glances, the whispered speculations. She wanted to scream. She simply rested her head on her desk. She was drained, emptied of energy.
