He felt his eyelids grow heavy, and the urge to just lie down on the floor consumed him. The metal walls of the elevator seemed to close in, and he imagined the office building above them, bustling with life, completely oblivious to his predicament. "This is just fantastic," he grumbled, his voice barely a whisper.

The air grew thick and stale, and the faint scent of Sarah's overly sweet perfume intensified. He glanced at her; she was pacing back and forth, cell phone pressed to her ear. He watched her for a moment, then looked back at the floor.

His limbs felt like lead weights. He wanted to curl up into a ball and shut everything out, but the thought of the floor and the enclosed space was almost worse. He wondered what time it was. The digital display above the door showed that they had been stuck for 45 minutes, but it felt like hours.
