The minutes crawled by like ancient snails. John leaned against the wall, his head resting against the cool metal. He felt a dull ache behind his eyes, a familiar feeling when he hadn't had a proper night's sleep. "Any news?" he asked, his voice barely audible.

Sarah, who had been attempting to pry open the doors, shook her head. He could see her expression, and the hint of the anxiety on her face. He sighed again, a sound of profound weariness. He wanted to go home, to collapse onto his bed.

The fluorescent lights flickered again, casting strange shadows on the walls. He watched the shadows, his mind blank. He felt a profound lack of energy, as though all the vibrancy had been sucked out of him. He felt like the building's infrastructure had collapsed onto his shoulders.
