The morning air felt heavy, like a damp towel draped over his shoulders. He trudged into the office, his footsteps echoing a rhythm of reluctant acceptance. The coffee, usually a vibrant elixir, tasted like lukewarm dishwater. He slumped into his chair, the familiar squeak a harsh counterpoint to the quiet hum of the fluorescent lights. His gaze drifted to the window, where the sky wore a perpetual shade of grey.

He stared blankly at the spreadsheets, numbers blurring into meaningless lines. This promotion meant everything, or at least it had. Now, the thought of the extra responsibilities, the increased pressure, felt like a lead weight pressing down on his chest. He imagined the congratulatory emails, the forced smiles, the inevitable disappointment.

"Morning, Mark," Brenda's voice chirped, a stark contrast to his mood. He managed a weak nod in response, the movement requiring more effort than it should have. He wished she’d just go away. He felt the familiar ache in his temples, the precursor to a headache.
