The drive to work felt like an eternity, the road stretching endlessly ahead. The once-familiar landscape seemed grey, devoid of colour or interest. He parked the car, the engine's quiet purr a stark contrast to the cacophony of thoughts swirling in his head. The interview. The rival. The possible success, or the inevitable failure.

He entered the office, his shoulders slumped, his head bowed. The energy of the workspace, usually invigorating, felt oppressive, almost suffocating. He walked slowly toward his desk, avoiding eye contact. He avoided everyone.

He found a message from Sarah, his competitor, on his desk. "Good luck today, Kevin!" it read. He crumpled the note in his hand. He wasn't particularly looking forward to any of it.
