The morning had started like any other – with the rising sun casting a pale light and the dull ache in his bones. John felt heavy, his limbs moving with a slow, deliberate pace. Each task felt monumental, each breath a struggle.

Then, a sudden, explosive sound, like the world was splitting in two. The neighborhood's most prominent landmark had met its end. John didn't react. He knew what it was.

He went back to the old couch, settling back in a slump. He was relieved it was on his neighbor’s property.
