He moved through the crowded supermarket as though encased in a bubble of apathy. The bright lights, the cacophony of sounds, the endless options – all felt like an assault on his senses. He went through the motions, selecting a few essential groceries, but the act lacked any spark of joy or intention. The world was just…there. He had to pick up his mail.

The letter was there, nestled amongst the flyers and junk. He'd instantly recognized the script from his childhood. He retreated to his car and read the apology. The words felt disconnected, unreal. He rubbed his eyes, a profound sense of weariness settling over him.
