The cheerful descriptions of the “updated kitchen” and “spacious backyard” did little to stir him. He sat slumped in his chair, the glow of the screen reflecting in his vacant eyes. A sense of inertia held him captive. He couldn’t seem to muster the energy to change his position.

He remembered the worn linoleum in the kitchen, the uneven grass he was forced to mow. The listing’s promises of modern comfort felt hollow, the photos like a foreign language. He let out a slow, deflated breath.

The idea of calling the real estate agent felt like scaling a mountain. He closed the laptop, letting it slide shut with a dull thud. He remained still, the silence of the room pressing in on him.
