The air in the house felt thick, stifling, like a pressure cooker on high. Frank pushed his plate away, his appetite nonexistent. The weight of unanswered questions had been pulling him downwards for weeks. He felt like he was wading through a thick, invisible swamp.

He needed to sort through his wife's things, she’d insisted he do it. As he was organizing her desk, he discovered a small, brightly colored envelope, tucked away inside a favorite book. It was a bank statement. The account was in her name, and had been active for years. He reeled, the world seeming to tilt on its axis.

He sat there, utterly motionless.
