The ocean's roar sounded distant, muffled by the fog that shrouded the seaside cottage. Chloe, wrapped in a threadbare blanket, felt a leaden quality to her limbs. She held the list, its pages damp with salty air. Her father, a man of quiet passions, had dreamt of a bolder life. "Climb Mount Kilimanjaro." "Learn to sail." "Fall in love."

The smell of seaweed and damp wood did little to invigorate her. The world felt muted, color drained from everything. She looked at the horizon, a blurry line where sea met sky. The thought of a challenging climb, of sailing on open water, seemed impossible. Each breath was an effort, each movement a burden.

She closed her eyes, the list resting limp on her lap. The fog pressed in, mirroring the heavy cloud within her heart.
