Her steps were slow, her shoulders slightly hunched. Ms. Chen felt the weight of accumulated stress, a pressure that squeezed the joy out of the air. The joy she usually took in her students, the subjects she taught, felt distant and muted.

A former student, now a musician, sent her a song composed just for her. It arrived as a digital file, a simple email with a subject line: “For You.” She put in her headphones, the song’s melody a sudden, unexpected sunrise. It was as though the world had suddenly changed, just for her.
