The world felt slow, as if moving underwater. Amelia stared out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, the drops blurring the world outside. A shadow fell across the pane, and she looked up to see Mr. Davis, her neighbor, standing on her porch.

He knocked, and Amelia forced herself to open the door. He immediately launched into a discussion about the massive willow tree that straddled their properties. "It’s casting such a shadow now," he began, his tone a mix of concern and expectation. "It's a little overwhelming, wouldn't you agree?"

Amelia nodded, her movements sluggish, her body aching with a bone-deep weariness. The thought of this, of anything, required too much effort. She stared at the rain, listening to Mr. Davis's words, the words fading into a distant murmur. The prospect of having to do anything about the tree made her feel completely drained.
