The photographer, renowned for her stark black-and-white portraits, watched the model’s back as she posed. The model was a striking beauty, and the shoot was going well. And then, as the model turned slightly, the artist saw it. A perfect rendition of her ‘Divided Heart’ series, intricately inked across her shoulder blades.

Her breath hitched. She felt as though the oxygen had been sucked from the room. She blinked, once, twice, as if the image might disappear.

“You… you have my work on your back,” she stammered, the words feeling alien and clumsy on her tongue. The model simply smiled serenely, a picture of unknowing innocence.
