It was at a book signing, a rare public appearance for the notoriously reclusive painter. A fan approached, holding out a copy of her art book. As she signed, the fan’s sleeve rode up, revealing the ‘Silent Sunflowers’ blooming across their forearm.

The pen slipped from my grasp, rolling across the table. Her fingers felt numb. The room swayed slightly, and the voices around her faded into a dull drone. A cold sweat broke out across her forehead. How?
