The dinner party had ground to a halt. The clinking of glasses, the murmur of conversation, had vanished, replaced by an unsettling quiet. His cousin, across the elegantly set table, had just declared his intention to become a follower of Jainism. A wave of nausea washed over him. He felt a disconnect, as if he were watching a movie about his life. The perfectly cooked food in front of him suddenly looked unappetizing. He pushed his plate away, suddenly aware of the pounding of his own heart. The room felt hot, stuffy, and overwhelmingly confusing.
