The cold seeped into her bones. Amelia felt as if the air had been sucked from her lungs. There it was, reflecting the harsh fluorescent light: her grandmother’s engagement ring. She felt a profound and almost sickening sensation of unreality.

She could barely see, the display case a watery smear. She was acutely aware of every breath, every heartbeat. She reached a hand out, her fingers trembling.
