The chipped ceramic mug felt heavy in Elias’s hand, the lukewarm coffee barely touched. He stared at the floral wallpaper in his childhood kitchen, the same pattern that had assaulted his senses for three decades. He'd never noticed how aggressively cheerful the tulips were before.

“So, you’ll be taking the smaller bedroom, then?” his mother asked, her voice bright, almost brittle.

Elias blinked, focusing on the way a single sunbeam illuminated a dust mote dancing in the air. "Yes," he managed, the word a croak. His entire life – the successful career, the independent apartment, the carefully constructed facade of competence – felt like a poorly constructed sandcastle, washed away by a rogue wave of… what exactly? He wasn't sure.

He took a slow sip of the coffee, its bitter taste doing little to ground him. The weight of his parents’ expectations, once a manageable pressure, now felt like a physical burden on his shoulders.
