"Mom, I just... I don't know," Chloe finally managed to say, her voice barely a whisper. She sat on the edge of her childhood bed, now redecorated with a floral comforter that felt strangely alien.

Her mother sat beside her, her hand hovering, but not touching, Chloe's arm. The silence felt thick, heavy.

Chloe looked around the room, the posters of pop stars and forgotten sports heroes, all relics of a former life. She found herself unable to speak again. The entire situation was… bizarre. She felt as though she'd stepped through a mirror into an alternate reality, a life she only vaguely remembered.
