The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the kitchen, a smell that transported Eleanor back to childhood. But this time it didn't feel the same. The warmth she'd once associated with it was replaced by a kind of... bewilderment.

Her mother beamed, holding out a plate. "Fresh from the oven, sweetie!"

Eleanor accepted a cookie, her fingers trembling slightly. The sweetness, the texture, the memory… they all seemed… wrong, somehow. She looked at her mother, her face etched with concern. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. She felt strangely trapped.
