He was cornered in the break room, the supervisor's arm a friendly weight on his shoulder. "Great news, we've hired someone to shadow you for a month. You'll be the one to show him the ropes!" He felt a sudden, intense heat flush his face. The words echoed in his head, a discordant symphony of fear and dread.

He mumbled a response, his voice barely a whisper. He wanted to disappear, to vanish into thin air. He stared at the coffee machine, as if it held the secret to his escape.

He left the break room and returned to his desk, his mind racing. Every email, every phone call, felt like a judgment. He was suddenly acutely aware of his own shortcomings, his own failings. The task before him was a mountain, and he was already beginning to crumble.
