"You're going to be the libero, Jake." The words sliced through the chatter of the volleyball team huddle. Jake, the team's star spiker, felt his muscles tense. He blinked several times, his gaze darting between his coach and the other players, searching for some clue, some hint this was a prank. The familiar smell of sweat and chlorine from the nearby pool seemed to intensify, making him lightheaded. He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. His throat constricted, and he couldn’t manage a coherent response. The coach's expression remained neutral, but the weight of the situation seemed to press down on him, crushing his confidence.
