“But… but she promised!” Emily’s voice cracked. Her gaze was fixed on the vacant seat in the orchestra's cello section, a cello with a familiar rosin dust. Madame Dubois, her cello instructor, had simply disappeared. The music school said she was pursuing other opportunities. No goodbye concert, no final lesson, nothing.

She clutched her own cello case, the familiar weight suddenly unfamiliar and awkward. The bow felt heavy in her hand. The silence was deafening, the space where Madame Dubois once sat seemed to expand to fill the entire auditorium, choking her. She wanted to yell, to weep, to break something.
