The ballroom lights blurred. Thomas felt a strange ringing in his ears. He was enjoying himself, really, until *she* strolled in, arms linked with a man he didn't recognize. Sarah. He hadn’t expected her. The wedding was for a colleague from work.

His heart pounded a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He felt disconnected from his own body. He found himself incapable of forming a coherent thought. All he could do was stare. He felt as if he was watching a film play out, but he was no longer an active participant.

He felt the eyes of the man Sarah was with. He nodded. The man nodded back. The exchange felt like a lifetime. He wished he could teleport himself to a different galaxy. He felt trapped.
