The string quartet’s music, once soothing, now grated on her nerves. Emily had been enjoying the wedding, the elegant decor, the happy atmosphere. Then, she turned, and there he was—David. Standing near the bar, chatting with the groom's brother. She felt a jolt of shock, followed by a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach.

She quickly averted her gaze, pretending to admire a floral arrangement. Her carefully constructed image of confidence and independence felt like a fragile bubble, ready to burst. She took a sip of champagne, the bubbles doing nothing to soothe the sudden dryness in her throat.

She wanted to run, to disappear, to be anywhere but here. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. The room seemed to tilt slightly.
