Sarah watched him, a slow, deliberate movement of his hand as he clicked off the call. He’d seen her. The knowledge of that fact – that he knew she’d been standing there, frozen by the sound of his voice speaking in a language she didn’t understand – felt like a physical blow. The air in the room seemed to thicken, making it hard to breathe.

Her hands found their way to her mouth, fingers pressed against her lips as if to contain a secret of her own. The room felt immense, filled with the unseen echoes of the conversation. Her mind raced, a whirlwind of unanswered questions, and every possible explanation, each more improbable than the last. She tried to swallow, but her throat was dry, a desert.

"Who was that?" she finally croaked, the words barely audible. The sound of her voice felt foreign to her own ears.
