Gemotions

The car keys felt heavy in her hand. She stared at them, the metal cold against her palm. He'd been so animated, his voice pitched just a little higher than usual, as if trying to keep a secret from her even through a phone. The snippets of conversation that had reached her made no sense, yet they spoke volumes.

She didn't know how to navigate this new terrain. Her brain felt like a scrambled mess. She fumbled with the keys, dropping them with a clatter. They landed on the floor, their sound echoing in the sudden quiet of the garage.

A tear slipped down her cheek, unbidden. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but all she could do was stand there, frozen, her hand still reaching for the keys.
