Gemotions

The balloons, deflated and haphazardly scattered across the living room floor, were the first clue. Sarah had pictured a riot of colour, a joyous explosion. Now, they lay limp and forlorn, like discarded memories. The silence in the house, a crushing weight. Her best friend, Emily, fiddled with a stray balloon string, her eyes avoiding contact.

"So… the restaurant had a plumbing issue," Emily mumbled, her voice faint. Sarah blinked, the words echoing oddly in the sudden void. She felt her face go numb, her jaw clenching involuntarily. The carefully constructed image of tonight’s celebration crumbled.

She stared, unmoving, at the empty space where the cake was supposed to be. A strange buzzing filled her ears. The scent of stale air and forgotten promises hung heavy in the atmosphere.
