"But… but everyone was coming, right?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. The brightly coloured streamers, now hanging limp and lifeless, seemed to mock my naivety. My best friend, Mark, who was supposed to be orchestrating everything, avoided my gaze. He busied himself rearranging a bowl of stale crisps.

My stomach lurched. The planned party, the carefully crafted guest list, the elaborate decorations – it all seemed a cruel joke. I felt as though the ground had been swept from beneath my feet.

The room, moments ago filled with anticipation, had suddenly become vast and empty. The silence was deafening.
