The cake, a magnificent creation of buttercream and sugar flowers, sat untouched on a table in the corner of the room. Its beauty felt irrelevant. The room, usually abuzz with the chatter of friends and family, was eerily silent. Her mother, her eyes red-rimmed, walked towards her with a sympathetic expression.

"Something came up," her mother said softly, her voice barely a whisper. She stared at the cake. It felt like an omen, a symbol of broken expectations. Her lungs contracted, as if a physical weight were pressing down on them.
