The email notification popped up on Sarah’s screen: “Salary Adjustment – New Hire.” She clicked, her heart rate spiking. Inside, the details of the new hire’s compensation package were stark, brutal. She couldn't breathe. Her hands started to tremble, a fine, involuntary tremor.

She had trained this person. She'd spent weeks showing them the ropes, answering their endless questions, and patiently correcting their mistakes. Now, this person, practically a novice, was making more than she did. A cold wave swept over her, leaving her feeling detached and distant from her own body.

"Are you alright, Sarah?" her coworker asked, her voice distant. Sarah could only shake her head, the words failing to come out. The keyboard seemed to blur before her eyes.
