The room was spinning. He had just read the internal memo, which detailed the compensation package for the new marketing associate. His own salary, which he'd been so proud of when he accepted the job, suddenly seemed pathetically small. His stomach lurched, and he felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead.

He, Mark, had years of experience in the field, multiple awards, and a reputation for brilliance. The new associate, who seemed to spend most of her time posting on social media, was being paid more. He wanted to shout, but he couldn’t seem to open his mouth. He felt a strange inability to move, almost as if he were paralyzed.

He saw his reflection in the window, and he didn’t recognize the man staring back at him.
