Rain lashed against the bus shelter, blurring the neon signs across the street. Maya’s hands felt strangely numb as she examined the contents of the wallet. Driver's license. Credit cards. A hefty wad of cash, more than she made in a month. Her gaze flickered up at the passing traffic, each car a potential owner, each face a possible threat. Her stomach churned. Should she report it? Take it to the police? The practical questions flitted through her mind, but they felt distant, irrelevant. She stared at the wallet, the leather cold against her clammy palms, and felt like she was standing outside of herself.
