He saw the familiar script in the open journal. It was the page where he poured out all of his hopes and fears about his upcoming audition. Across the room, his roommate, Chris, was scrolling through social media, his face expressionless. John felt a surge of adrenaline, followed by a profound sense of helplessness.

John’s vision blurred. His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic rhythm against the silence. He was aware of every creak of the floorboards, every breath he took.

Chris finally looked up, his eyes meeting John's. “You okay? You look like you’ve just been hit by a truck.”

John just stood there, utterly unable to respond. He felt a deep sense of shock, an unbearable weight settling in his stomach. He was paralyzed.
