The photograph, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a taunt. Her parents, smiling, their faces familiar, yet now… suspect. Sarah stared at it, her hands clasped tightly, knuckles white. The DNA results, stark and undeniable, had upended everything she thought she knew. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps.

She felt a strange disembodiment, as if she were floating, disconnected from her body. The familiar scent of her childhood home, usually so comforting, now seemed suffocating. She slowly sat down, a lead weight dragging her onto the sofa. The silence of the house pressed in on her, heavy and oppressive.
