Gemotions

The antique music box sat on the mahogany table, its inlaid mother-of-pearl shimmering under the chandelier light. Aunt Mildred, a woman whose every movement was usually precise and deliberate, was gesturing wildly. Her words, a flurry of accusations and justifications, blurred in my ears. The air seemed to thicken, making it difficult to breathe. I could only stare at the music box, its delicate melody – the same one she used to play for me as a child – echoing in the sudden, vast silence within my own mind.

My hands felt clammy, and I gripped the edge of the chair so tightly that my knuckles turned white. A strange ringing began in my ears, completely drowning out her urgent pleas. The world around me had narrowed down to the tiny, ornate scene on the music box's lid – a miniature carousel endlessly turning.

"But... but why?" The question escaped my lips, barely a whisper. The familiar scent of her lavender perfume suddenly felt overwhelming, suffocating.
